North Shore Arts Association's New Artist Members for 2017:

"The Lookout"
TOM BAILEY describes his painting style as "Inadvertently Impressionist". His goal is to create vibrant, energetic paintings that evoke a particular emotion, or perhaps rekindle a pleasant memory.
"All my paintings start at places I've actually been", he says. "Where they take me from there, however--or where I take them--is always an unplanned adventure."
Bailey is a juried member of several regional and national arts organizations and is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America, the Connecticut Pastel Society and the Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod. He has been fortunate to study directly with a wide spectrum of excellent artists including Frank Federico, Richard McKinley, Albert Handell, Donald Jurney, Julie Airoldi, and Daniel Edmondson.
Tom is a full-time artist with a studio in Amesbury, MA. He paints primarily in pastels and oils. He and his family divide their time between a small town north of Boston, Massachusetts and an even smaller town south of Keene, New Hampshire.

"Cobalt & Silver"
MARY ELLEN BROWN "In my work I aim to give a sense of peace and beauty, creating paintings with simple elegance and mood."
Now living in Southern New Hampshire, Mary Ellen studied Fine Art and Digital Photography at Salem State College supplementing with classes at Montserrat College of Art. Now an award-winning artist she maintains a studio at Western Ave. Studios in Lowell, MA. (#A404). Having worked in oils, pastels, graphite, watercolor, and digital photography her focus is now centered on pastel painting, preferring a highly detailed realism as seen in still life. She is inspired by the works of the Old Dutch Masters as well as the simple yet stunning beauty of grapes, flowers, or a silver pitcher. "My aim is to share my joy in and appreciation of the subject matter, by focusing the viewer on the details. Using sanded pastel papers allows me to build layers, helping to develop depth, shape, color, light, and shadows."
In between studio time and time spent showing in many exhibitions over the past years, Mary Ellen enjoys teaching the skills and sharing the joy of painting. She believes that the love of painting was a God-given gift to be shared with others and loves to see others succeed in their artistic endeavors under her teaching.
Mary Ellen is currently a member of the Pastel Guild of Europe; the Pastel Society of America; the Pastel Society of New Hampshire; The Whistler House Museum of Art; Lowell Art Association, Inc.; the Western Ave. Artist Association, Lowell, MA; Chelmsford Art Association; a Juried Artist member of Hollis Art Association and a Juried Artist member of the North Shore Arts Association, Gloucester, MA.

DAN DELOUISE began his career as an artist in New York City, and earned a BFA degree from Syracuse University. He moved to Cape Ann in 1993. Dan had established himself as an illustrator earlier in the nineties, painting professionally for more than 25 years, creating commissioned artworks for major corporations in the entertainment field, such as Disney, Hasbro, Lucas Films, Reebok, Scholastic, and the like. Dan's work has been displayed at the Society of Illustrators in NYC, as well as being published throughout the US and abroad. Dan has had the honor of being selected to create original foreign postage stamp designs to commemorate the Coalition during The Gulf War, and to commemorate the 100th year anniversary of the International Olympic Committee.
After a long stint in the commercial and digital art world, Dan realized he was missing the tactile aspect of painting; the "one on one" experience between the artist and the canvas. He opened his first gallery in November, 2013 at 53 Main Street, Rockport, MA, representing six different artists.
"Nancy's Secret Garden"
Currently, Dan is an active member of the Rockport Art Colony, a strong advocate for the arts on Cape Ann and instrumental in encouraging the long tradition of plein air painting here on this beautiful coastline.
Dan continues to accept commissions in the area of land, sea, and cityscapes, as well as portraiture of people, pets, cars, homes, etc. "Please stop in the gallery whenever you're in Rockport; we'd love to see you." http://www.DeLouiseStudios.com

"Rocky Neck Reflections"
ANN GOLDBERG graduated from Boston University with a BFA in painting. She has continued her studies in painting with David Curtis, Jeanne Rosier Smith, and Julie Airoldi, among others. The landscape and light of Cape Ann is very inspiring and for the last several years most of her paintings have been of that area. Ann lives in Revere, MA and drives to Cape Ann as often as possible to paint.
Ann is a member of the Rockport Art Association and has exhibited her work at Central Street Gallery in Manchester by theSea. She has worked in both pastels and oils, although for the past few years has focused  mainly on pastels. Ann has won many local awards for her pastels, including Best in Show at the Newburyport Art Association, the Robert B. Donnelly, Jr., MD Award from Rockport Art Association and the Janice Z. Ulan Memorial Award from the
North Shore Arts Association's associate members' show. Ann has taught pastel painting workshops and done pastel demonstrations locally. Her paintings are in many local and national collections.

"A Jewel of a Day"
VIRGINIA HILL is a watercolor painter from Danvers, MA. She earned a BA in Art History from Drew University and graduate credits in pre-Columbian Art History from the University of the Americas, Mexico City. Virginia served on the Board of the North Shore Arts Association as Recording Secretary from 2013-2015. In 2000, she established the Virgina Hill Gallery on Rocky Neck, Gloucester, before moving to Bearskin Neck, Rockport from 2002-2007. While the gallery was open in Rockport, Steven Spielberg purchases her watercolor of Motif#1.
A Jewel of a Day, pictured here, was juried into the 2016 Biennial North American Open Show of the New England Watercolor Society held at the North Shore Arts Association. Virginia has earned awards for Excellence in Any Medium from Rockport Art Association and North Shore Arts.
"The authenticity of the seascapes and landscape of Cape Ann and the North Shore are a continuously fascinating challenge, which I humbly attempt to represent with watercolor."

"Self Portrait"
"New Guineas"

DAVID NEILL
"In the past, for many years, I did drawing and illustration, working in graphite, colored pencil and pastel. At the urging of my son, Tim, (also a new artist member of the North Shore Arts Association) a few years ago I began working in oil (Tim gave me a set of oil paints for Christmas!) And, as they say, "that was that". I fell in love with oil painting! My style is realism and naturalism."
