In Memoriam: NSAA's Beloved Past President Harold Kloongian (1928-2017)

HAROLD KLOONGIAN
(1928-2017)

It is with heavy hearts that the art community of Cape Ann notes the passing of the North Shore Arts Association's beloved past President, Harold Kloongian.
Harold Kloongian was a highly regarded American painter. He was born in Massachusetts and remained a lifelong resident. Drawing and painting at an early age, he quickly developed an affinity for watercolor and oils which invariably set his course in life. His deep passion for Vermont landscape and Gloucester/Rockport marine genre are beautifully depicted in the plein air tradition. Many of his works can be found in numerous public and private collections.
Harold received his art education at the Art Institute of Boston (formerly School of Practical Art) on scholarship, the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, and Boston University. He also studied with notable artists Emile A. Gruppe, Carl Nelson, John Pike, Frank Rines, and Edgar Whitney.
Throughout his career, Harold was an illustrator, art director, and a publications production manager. For a major portion of his career, he served as Director of Publications for Avco Everett Research Laboratory (no Textron Systems), before retirement.
Harold served three terms as President of the North Shore Arts Association in Gloucester, MA (1986-1992) and one term as Vice President. Harold was a key member of both the Cape Ann and Vermont art communities since the early 1960's, painting continually and providing support to the arts. In addition to the North Shore Arts Association, Harold was an active, prize winning artist member of the Rockport Art Association, Academic Artist Association and the Hudson Valley Art Association
