His work is distinguished by its skillful design, lively color, and perceptive interpretation of the landscape and marine subjects that held such a fascination for him. His very popular workshops and relentless search for inspiring subject matter took him on far-ranging painting trips throughout New England, particularly New York State, in addition to those locales found closer to home, on his beloved Cape Ann.
Bernard was an active artist member in a long list of prestigious professional associations, including the North Shore Arts Association, Rockport Art Association, Boston Watercolor Society, Academic Artists Association, Rochester Art Club, International Marine Painters Association, and the New England Watercolor Society.
He work was acclaimed by the public and by his fellow artists. He received numerous awards and prizes during his long and successful career. Recent awards include the Gold Medal at the North Shore Arts Association, and the Eleanor M. Callow Award at Rockport Art Association
